Abstract

The effects of heparin, aprotinin and sodium citrate on the adhesion formation after bacterial peritonitis was studied in a rat model. Six groups of rats, aside from the control group, received the three agents either systemically or intraperitoneally. The agents given in either way were set on a single dose per day basis, starting one hour preoperatively and lasting for four doses. The presence of adhesion formation and infection were evaluated at relaparotomy on 15 th postoperative day. The rate and stage of adhasion together with the infection ratio and mortality was calculated in each group. Heparin given in either way was found to reduce significantly the rate of adhesion formation, infection and mortality compared with other treatment groups.
