Abstract

Sixteen patients with ischemic colitis were treated during the last fifteen years in the First Propaedeutic Surgical Department of Athens University. Type I ischemic colitis was present in eight patients, while type II and III was encountered in three and five patients, respectively. Type I patients were treated by conservative measures are being followed-up with barium enema controls. There was no mortality in these patients. Patients with type II and III disease were all operated. The procedure of choice was colectomy for type II disease and colectomy with proximal colostomy was performed for type III disease. The overall mortality was 18.7 for type II and III ischemic colitis however, emergency colectomy was associated with a 60% mortality rate.
