Abstract

Adjustable silicon gastric banding technique is the most recent technique in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. With this development, the previous surgical techniques that carry the morbidity of an anastomosis have fallen out of favor.

Five patients were operated on by this technique in our unit. Open method was used in four patients, while the band was placed laparoscopically in the last patient. There were no metabolic or surgical complications in the postoperative period.

The technique entails encircling of the gastric fundus with an adjustable silicon band 3-3.5 cm below the cardia, leaving a 25-30cc of fundal pouch. It has been widely performed by an open method since seven years and laparoscopically since a year in many centers around the world. Its applicability, low morbidity rate, rapid effect and the fast recovery of the stomach following the removal of the band if necessary, makes it a preferable method.
