Abstract

The association between renal dsyfunction and obstructive jaundice is well established. Various pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic strategies have been proposed but renal dysfunction remains a persistent problem in hepatobiliary practice. Forty patients were included in this prospective study between February 1996 and October 1997. There were 27 male and 13 female patients with a mean age 58 years. The major and point was renal failure. Secondary and points were the assessment of preoperative and postoperative renal functions. Forty patients were assigned in the four groups: (Control-Mannitol-Dopamine and Lactulose). There were no significant difference between the Mannitol, Dopamine and Lactulose compared with the control (p>0.05). The results suggest that management of fluid and electrolyte status, particularly accurate preoperative hydration will be the key point of preventing renal dsyfunction in obstructive jaundice.
